Whether I’m sharing it with a partner, family, friends, or simply spending it on my own, it reminds me to express love in all its forms.

How Valentine’s Day Began: A Look Back in History
As I was reading about the history of Valentine’s Day, I learned that it actually traces back to ancient Rome.
From what I found, it’s believed to be named after Saint Valentine, a priest who lived in the 3rd century. Historical accounts say that Emperor Claudius II banned marriages for young soldiers because he thought single men made better warriors. Valentine secretly performed weddings for couples in love, and when this was discovered, he was imprisoned and later executed on February 14. Over time, he became a symbol of love, devotion, and courage.
As the years passed, especially during the Middle Ages, the day became closely associated with romantic love in places like England and France. By the 18th and 19th centuries, people began exchanging handwritten notes, flowers, and small tokens of affection as part of the tradition.
Today, Valentine’s Day is something much bigger—it has grown into a global celebration of love in all forms, not just romantic, but also for family, friends, and even self-love.
When Valentine’s Day Became Widely Celebrated
Upon further reading, it seems Valentine’s Day became widely celebrated during the Victorian era, when printed cards and small gifts became accessible to many people. By the 20th century, it had spread worldwide through media, art, literature, and commerce.
Today, aside from romance, it is also about gratitude, connection, appreciation, and expressing emotions.
